Jack gets reward for a weekend of perseverance by inheriting a late point at Mugello.
Jack has just managed to continue his run of scoring points in every race he’s finished in 2017, coming home 15th in Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix, which was won by Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso.
It was a difficult weekend for Jack at Mugello, after his practice crash at Le Mans in France two weeks ago left him with right knee and right hand injuries, the latter of which made braking even more difficult than usual at the high-speed Tuscan track.
Jack started from a season-worst qualifying spot of 19th on Sunday, but made his customary strong start to gain four places on lap one. He soon dropped back to 18th after being passed by Pol Espargaro (KTM), Scott Redding (Ducati) and Hector Barbera (Ducati), and it was the veteran Spaniard who was to feature prominently in Jack’s race from there, the pair running in close proximity for much of the 23-lap distance.
Jack spent much of the first half of the race in 16th place before muscling past Barbera and into the points on lap 15, but when a recovering Jonas Folger (Yamaha) took that place from Jack the next lap and Barbera came back through on lap 19, it looked like Jack would need some good fortune to add to his 2017 points tally.
That good luck came on the final lap, when Honda riders Cal Crutchlow and Dani Pedrosa crashed in the same incident with four corners to go when squabbling over 10th place. Jack fought with Barbera all the way to the line, but the Spaniard finished just over a tenth of a second ahead for 14th.
“Scoring a point today is bonus considering from the start of the weekend I just didn’t feel on the pace with a lack of front grip and confidence,” Jack said afterwards.
“But it was a solid result with no crashes, and I did the best I could in the race. Now I’m looking forward to doing the Barcelona race next weekend.”
With his one point for 15th place, Jack now has 30 points for the season and sits in 12th place in the championship ahead of the next race, which comes at Catalunya in Spain next Sunday afternoon.
