Jack’s preview: Assen is special for every MotoGP rider at every time, but for Jack, the ‘Cathedral’ of Grand Prix racing will always hold that little bit extra reverence after his incredible victory there two years ago. Those good feelings come at an opportune time for Jack this year, as a strong start to the season with five straight top-10 finishes has come to a sudden halt after an early crash at Mugello was followed by a fuel pump problem at Catalunya last time out, the two non-scores seeing him fall to 10th overall in the championship. The Dutch TT was one of Jack’s strongest races last year too, finishing a very convincing sixth to match the same result he had at Misano later in the campaign as a season-best. This is an event steeped in history; the Dutch TT has been run since 1925, and this season sees the 88th running of the race, but interestingly the first time it has been held in July. Up until 2016, the race was always held on the final Saturday in June. Jack’s win two years back snapped what had largely been a run of outs at Assen, and the first priority will be to make it to Q2 and the top-12 shootout for pole on Saturday, having never achieved the feat on his previous three MotoGP visits. While there are always concerns about the weather at the most northerly circuit MotoGP visits (or opportunities to be taken, as Jack did in 2016), the forecast for the weekend is warm and dry – for now …
